Mandela leaves South Africa to seek training and support

← Back to Dashboard
Biography ๐Ÿ“… 11 January 1962 ๐Ÿ“ South Africa

Travelling under the name David Motsamayi, Mandela secretly left South Africa to seek military training and support for the ANCโ€™s armed struggle. His journey was an act of movement diplomacy as well as preparation: he sought relationships with African governments and liberation movements. The trip connected domestic resistance to a wider decolonizing continent, while the apartheid state portrayed such contacts through a security lens.
