After four and a half years, Mandela and the last 27 accused were acquitted of high treason. The prosecution failed to prove its case against the Congress Alliance. The long trial had consumed organizers’ time and resources and attempted to cast a democratic program as treason. Mandela went underground after the acquittal as the ANC remained banned and the state continued to close legal avenues for opposition.
