The Congress of the People adopts the Freedom Charter

← Back to Dashboard
Biography 📅 26 June 1955 📍 South Africa

Delegates at Kliptown adopted the Freedom Charter, a program asserting that South Africa belonged to all who lived in it and demanding political equality and social rights. Mandela was banned from attending and followed the proceedings secretly. The charter emerged from a mass collection of demands and a broad Congress Alliance; it was not a document authored by Mandela alone.
