Albert Luthuli calls off the Defiance Campaign

← Terug naar het dashboard
Biografie ๐Ÿ“… 24 April 1953 ๐Ÿ“ Zuid-Afrika

ANC president Albert Luthuli called off the campaign after the government introduced new security legislation. The decision followed months of mass action, arrests, and growing state repression. This was a movement-level strategic response; it should not be attributed to Mandela alone. More than 8,000 volunteers had faced imprisonment, and the campaign had widened the ANCโ€™s social base despite failing to repeal the targeted laws.
