Malcolm writes from Mecca about a changing view of race

← Back to Dashboard
Biography 📅 20 April 1964 📍 Saudi Arabia

In a letter from Jeddah during his pilgrimage, Malcolm described worship alongside Muslims of many racial backgrounds and said the experience challenged his belief that interracial brotherhood could not exist. This marked a consequential shift in his religious and political outlook. It did not erase his analysis of institutional racism or his commitment to Black liberation; it widened the international and ethical frame through which he pursued them.
