UN inquiry gathers post-mortem material in Tehran

UN specialists arrived in Tehran for another on-site inquiry into chemical-weapons allegations, collecting physical and medical evidence during the February–March mission.

A further 500 TOW missiles were delivered to Iran. Despite the combined February deliveries, no hostages were released immediately afterward, underscoring the channel’s uncertain bargaining results.

At the Conference on Disarmament, Velayati asked whether international institutions could try war criminals and chemical-weapons users if treaty negotiations and verification failed.

UN specialists examined and interviewed patients at Tehran’s Labbafi-Nejad Hospital. Their work included interviews with Iraqi casualties held in Iran, widening the clinical evidence considered.

The UN team surveyed three Abadan-area sites, examined debris and craters, collected soil samples and examined patients at a field hospital and an Ahvaz hospital.

The UN mission visited the Val Fajr infirmary at Tehran’s Azadi Stadium, including the large treatment facility in its chemical-casualty investigation.

The operation concluded without a decisive outcome. Iran’s simultaneous offensives across different sectors spread Iraqi forces but also strained Iranian logistics and manpower.

Iraq said cooperation on Resolution 582 depended on Iranian acceptance and agreement on a comprehensive timetable, including prompt withdrawal and prisoner exchange. Its reply was conditional.

While preparing their report, UN specialists received results from the Spiez laboratory in Switzerland, incorporating laboratory work into their Iranian chemical-weapons investigation.

The UN mission received results from the Swedish laboratory at Umea, adding a second laboratory’s analysis to the chemical evidence gathered during its Iranian fieldwork.
