The International Court of Justice rejected Myanmar’s preliminary objections in the case brought by The Gambia under the Genocide Convention. The decision allowed the interstate accountability process concerning the Rohingya to proceed to the merits. It strengthened a legal avenue for a persecuted Muslim minority without itself deciding whether genocide had been committed.
