Members of York Mosque invited a small group of English Defence League supporters for tea and conversation after a threatened demonstration. Mosque supporters had gathered in solidarity, and participants also played football. Local Muslim leaders explained their opposition to violence while refusing to accept collective blame for the killing of Lee Rigby. The response used direct encounter and community solidarity to challenge hostile stereotypes; it did not mean that wider anti-Muslim racism had disappeared.
