A court in Meaux fined Hind Ahmas and Najate Naït Ali for wearing the niqab in public. Police had stopped them during a demonstration against the ban in May. Amnesty International condemned the fines as violations of religious expression. The case shows how women’s opposition to the ban encountered punishment through ordinary judicial procedures; the women were not simply passive subjects of a debate conducted by others.
