Women protest as France’s public face-covering ban takes effect

← Back to Dashboard
📅 11 April 2011 📍 France

People including women wearing the full-face veil protested in central Paris as France’s ban on face coverings in public took effect. Police detained several participants, saying the protest was unauthorized. Amnesty International condemned the restrictions and defended the women’s freedom of expression, religion and protest. The event centers women resisting state control over their dress, rather than assuming that all Muslim women held a single view of veiling.
