At Maskwacis, Pope Francis asked forgiveness for harm inflicted through forced assimilation and residential schools. Survivors, elders and Indigenous leaders attended. Bringing the apology to Indigenous territory followed the Vatican meeting in April, but acknowledgment still had to be measured against demands for records, reparations and lasting institutional change.
