Student Chumani Maxwele protested at the Cecil Rhodes statue at the University of Cape Town, helping initiate the Rhodes Must Fall campaign. Students connected the colonial monument to wider experiences of exclusion. Their demands made institutional culture, historical authority and the conditions of Black participation matters of public contestation.
