The National Peace Accord establishes mechanisms to confront political violence

Political, business and labour representatives signed the National Peace Accord in Johannesburg. The agreement established structures to monitor, mediate and investigate violence during the transition. It sought to make political participation possible amid intimidation and killings, without itself settling the struggle over the future constitution.
