The Mangrove Nine defeat the principal riot charge

After a lengthy trial, all nine defendants were acquitted of the principal charge of incitement to riot. Four received suspended sentences for lesser offences. Their defence exposed weaknesses in police evidence and brought racist policing into public scrutiny. The outcome strengthened the capacity of Black communities to challenge the criminalization of their political organizing.
