Following sustained campaigning, voters approved removing the exclusion of Aboriginal people from constitutional population reckoning and enabling the Commonwealth to legislate for them. The result was an important political victory. It did not itself grant citizenship, voting rights or land rights, and campaigners continued pressing for substantive equality.
