FRELIMO launched armed struggle against Portuguese colonial government. Under Eduardo Mondlane’s leadership, the movement sought national liberation from an order that denied equal political authority to the colonized population. The campaign began a new phase of resistance; Mozambique’s independence followed in 1975, rather than on this date.
