Jamaica became independent following decades of labour mobilization, nationalist politics and constitutional change. Sovereignty shifted authority from colonial government to Jamaican institutions. The achievement opened new possibilities for political self-direction within a society still shaped by plantation slavery, racial hierarchy and unequal access to economic resources.
