Nigeria became independent after nationalist campaigning and constitutional negotiations. The end of British political sovereignty challenged foreign control over one of Africa’s largest populations. The institutional meaning of independence includes the right to govern, while questions of resource control, social inequality and the relationship among communities required continuing political struggle.
