The Supreme Court ruled that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional. The decision grew from the actions of families, students and lawyers in several communities. It challenged the stateโ€™s organization of educational inferiority. Implementing the ruling required further struggle because a judicial declaration did not itself overcome resistance by school authorities and segregationist officials.
