Black sailors revolt against flogging in the Brazilian navy

Sailors, most of them Black, seized warships and demanded an end to corporal punishment. João Cândido became a prominent leader. Although Brazil had abolished slavery, racialized discipline persisted in a state institution; the revolt challenged those continuities rather than treating legal emancipation as complete freedom.
