Armed colonial forces invaded Parihaka, arrested its leaders, and dispersed residents. Te Whiti and Tohu’s community had practiced nonviolent resistance to land confiscation. The invasion shows that colonial coercion targeted peaceful assertion of Indigenous rights as well as armed resistance.
