Ottoman Firman Confirms Status Quo in Jerusalem and Bethlehem Christian Holy Places

Sultan Abd al-Majid I adopts a firman delimiting the possessory rights and the spatial and temporal usage rights concerning the modes of sharing control over the Christian holy places in Jerusalem (Church of the Holy Sepulchre, monastery of Dayr al-Sultan, Sanctuary of the Ascension on the Mount of Olives and Tomb of the Virgin ) and Bethlehem (Church of Nativity ) by the various Christian communities, especially the Latin European clergy under the aegis of France and the Greek Orthodox community whose protection is claimed by Russia (on the basis of the Russian-Ottoman Treaty of Kuchuk-Kainarji of 1774 ).
