A distant moon broadens planetary astronomy

Comparing sky positions with a chart made the new planet identifiable during the observing session.

The dated observation in Berlin followed calculations developed in France and Britain.

William Lassell detected Neptune's largest moon seventeen days after the planet's discovery.

The discovery showed that the newly identified planet has a moon.

Lassell's telescope revealed a faint moving companion near the planet.

Carrington observed bright white patches near a sunspot during his regular solar observations.

Richard Hodgson independently observed the unusual white-light flare.

The 1 September observations are among the first recorded sightings of a solar flare.

A powerful geomagnetic storm followed; the sequence later helped develop the study of space weather.

The UTC catalog fixes the transit on 9 December, giving astronomers another rare timing opportunity.
