Neptune gains its first known satellite

Galle and d'Arrest found the predicted planet near a position calculated by Le Verrier.

Perturbations in Uranus's orbit had led Le Verrier and independently Adams toward a possible unseen planet.

Comparing sky positions with a chart made the new planet identifiable during the observing session.

The dated observation in Berlin followed calculations developed in France and Britain.

William Lassell detected Neptune's largest moon seventeen days after the planet's discovery.

Lassell's telescope revealed a faint moving companion near the planet.

Triton became the first known object orbiting Neptune.

Carrington observed bright white patches near a sunspot during his regular solar observations.

Richard Hodgson independently observed the unusual white-light flare.

The 1 September observations are among the first recorded sightings of a solar flare.
