Mathematical traditions meet in translation centers

A paper dated 10 July 2022 links the Moscow Papyrus formula for a truncated pyramid with Liu Hui's geometric reasoning.

Problem 14 of the Moscow Papyrus preserves an exact rule for a difficult solid-geometry problem.

The Chinese mathematician's dissection arguments suggest ways ancient practitioners could understand such formulas without Euclidean proof.

It argues that historians trained only in Greek geometry and modern algebra overlooked illuminating comparisons between Egypt and China.

The article shows that scholarship and cultural exchange flourished across Africa, Asia and the Islamic world during centuries often framed through Western European decline.

Baghdad's scholars translated and transformed materials from many regions rather than inheriting a single civilizational line.

Calling an era dark can hide thriving institutions and knowledge systems outside Western Europe.

Published on 7 March 2024, the paper examines counting, time-reckoning, ritual construction and later symbolic computation.

The author distinguishes context-based arithmetic using objects and names from later procedures enabled by numeral systems.

Claims about advanced Vedic mathematics are tested against the chronological evidence for scripts, symbols and operations.
