Global metrication later follows both cooperation and empire

Metric advocates presented the system as universal, but adoption required state power, education and negotiation with existing measures.

Standard units supported taxation, engineering, scientific comparison and expanding bureaucratic control.

Physical prototypes were placed in the French National Archives to embody the legal definitions of the new units.

The standards show how mathematical measurement depends on objects, laboratories and procedures for comparison.

Replicas and calibration practices allowed governments and scientists to reproduce standards across distance.

Augusta Ada Byron, later Countess of Lovelace, was born in London and became an important interpreter of Charles Babbage's proposed Analytical Engine.

Her notes argued that a general machine could manipulate symbols according to rules, extending the idea of computation beyond numerical tables.

Lovelace's published table is frequently described as the first detailed computer program intended for implementation by a machine.

Private tutoring and elite networks opened doors generally closed to women, while later histories still debated the scale of her independent contribution.

Babbage described machinery for calculating and printing astronomical and mathematical tables, reducing human transcription errors.
