Decimal structure organizes measurement

Richard Price presented Thomas Bayes' posthumous essay on inverse probability to the Society.

The essay considered how observed outcomes could update beliefs about an unknown probability.

The event shows that mathematical authorship and survival often depend on editors, correspondents and institutions.

Modern statistics uses related ideas in science, medicine and computing, although current Bayesian theory extends far beyond the 1763 text.

A law established decimal units intended to replace varied local measures with a common standard.

Metric advocates presented the system as universal, but adoption required state power, education and negotiation with existing measures.

Standard units supported taxation, engineering, scientific comparison and expanding bureaucratic control.

Physical prototypes were placed in the French National Archives to embody the legal definitions of the new units.

The standards show how mathematical measurement depends on objects, laboratories and procedures for comparison.

Replicas and calibration practices allowed governments and scientists to reproduce standards across distance.
