Researchers from Colombia contribute to Babylonian historiography

Large instruments and coordinated observations required geometry, trigonometry and extensive numerical computation.

The publication emphasizes movement, translation and collaboration rather than assigning science to one culture.

A Latin American research team published a computational analysis of the Babylonian tablet on 7 January 2020.

The authors treat the tablet as a high-precision calculating device and analyze error numerically.

Using present-day numerical concepts makes the tablet accessible while raising questions about anachronistic terminology.

The annual observance uses 14 March, associated with the decimal digits 3.14, to promote mathematics worldwide.

Activities connect the discipline with health, climate, technology, culture, industry and sustainable development.

Schools and institutions can use the day to feature Indigenous, African, Asian, Islamic, Latin American and women's contributions.

Celebration alone does not remove unequal schooling, language barriers, digital divides or the concentration of research funding.

Published on 26 December 2021, the paper proposes that ratios on Plimpton 322 operated like a systematic trigonometric table.
