Silk Roads history replaces the idea of isolated civilizations

Japanese scholars worked on equations and geometry while merchants and officials used calculating tools in daily life.

Readers can perform the algorithms rather than treating Edo-period knowledge only as museum material.

The 21 December 2018 article describes astronomy and mathematics as products of sustained intercultural exchange.

Translations and critiques allowed scholars to compare numerical tables, geometric models and observational traditions.

Large instruments and coordinated observations required geometry, trigonometry and extensive numerical computation.

A Latin American research team published a computational analysis of the Babylonian tablet on 7 January 2020.

The authors treat the tablet as a high-precision calculating device and analyze error numerically.

Using present-day numerical concepts makes the tablet accessible while raising questions about anachronistic terminology.

The event shows that the history of mathematics is now studied through global scholarly networks.

The annual observance uses 14 March, associated with the decimal digits 3.14, to promote mathematics worldwide.
