Missing rows are predicted mathematically

The tablet contains numerical relations among right-triangle sides more than a millennium before Pythagoras.

Historians debate whether the tablet was a teaching aid, reciprocal table or trigonometric object.

The study helps general audiences see Mesopotamia as a source of sophisticated numerical methods, not merely a precursor to Greece.

A paper dated 17 September 2011 proposes a culturally plausible reconstruction of the tablet's numerical sequence.

The analysis builds on Babylonian sexagesimal arithmetic rather than assuming modern angle measurement.

The paper illustrates why understanding scribal practices matters when interpreting ancient numerical artifacts.

Published on 4 April 2012, the paper interprets patterned notches on the Central African artifact as a calculating tool.

Repeated relationships among notches are used to test arithmetic, calendar and slide-rule interpretations.

It challenges assumptions that formal numerical reasoning began only in literate Eurasian civilizations.

The paper presents a hypothesis, not certainty, reminding users that archaeological objects can sustain multiple mathematical readings.
