Enormous peaceful processions in Tehran and other cities displayed national unity against the monarchy.

Volunteer marshals and neighborhood networks helped prevent provocations and demonstrated an alternative capacity for public order.

Women participated in large numbers, making family and community involvement visible in the revolutionary coalition.

Demonstrators renewed the call for the Shah's departure and recognition of Khomeini's leadership.

The scale and discipline of the crowds showed that repression risked uncontrollable national conflict.

Organizers managed routes, security and communication on a scale the weakening government could not match.

After other liberal politicians declined, the monarch asked the National Front figure to form a civilian government.

He sought to restore constitutional government while retaining the monarchy, a position rejected by most of the revolutionary movement.

His acceptance split him from former allies who insisted that cooperation with the Shah could not answer popular demands.
