Maryam Mirzakhani becomes the first woman awarded a Fields Medal
📅 13 August 2014The IMU recognized her work on the dynamics and geometry of Riemann surfaces and moduli spaces.
Artur Avila becomes the first Brazilian Fields Medalist
📅 13 August 2014His award for dynamical systems marked a milestone for mathematical research in Latin America.
The 2014 medalists reflect transnational mathematics
📅 13 August 2014The laureates' careers crossed Iran, Brazil, India, Europe and North America, showing the mobility and unequal geography of research institutions.
Recognition exposes the Fields Medal's long gender gap
📅 13 August 2014A prize created in 1936 took nearly eight decades to honour a woman, prompting scrutiny of structural barriers rather than claims of missing talent.
First International Day of Mathematics is celebrated
📅 14 March 2020The annual observance uses 14 March, associated with the decimal digits 3.14, to promote mathematics worldwide.
Mathematics is framed as a public resource
📅 14 March 2020Activities connect the discipline with health, climate, technology, culture, industry and sustainable development.
Global celebration can broaden historical narratives
📅 14 March 2020Schools and institutions can use the day to feature Indigenous, African, Asian, Islamic, Latin American and women's contributions.
Access remains an issue in mathematical education
📅 14 March 2020Celebration alone does not remove unequal schooling, language barriers, digital divides or the concentration of research funding.
