Babbage described machinery for calculating and printing astronomical and mathematical tables, reducing human transcription errors.
Polynomial values could be generated through repeated addition, allowing gears to carry out a systematic mathematical method.
The machine transferred parts of calculation from human computers to mechanisms but still depended on designers, machinists and operators.
Accurate tables supported navigation, surveying, taxation and astronomy, activities closely tied to British administrative and maritime power.
