French National Convention
A law established decimal units intended to replace varied local measures with a common standard.
The metre, litre and gram were connected through powers of ten, simplifying conversion and calculation.
Metric advocates presented the system as universal, but adoption required state power, education and negotiation with existing measures.
Standard units supported taxation, engineering, scientific comparison and expanding bureaucratic control.
