Scientific communication gains a dated public record
📅 6 March 1665Serial publication helped establish priority, criticism and cumulative discussion among dispersed correspondents.
Mathematical knowledge becomes periodical news
📅 6 March 1665Problems, observations, instruments and calculations could circulate more rapidly than through large books alone.
The journal's network reflected empire and exclusion
📅 6 March 1665Its global reports often depended on colonial travel and unequal access; readers should distinguish wide geographic reach from equal participation.
First issue of Philosophical Transactions appears
📅 6 March 1665Henry Oldenburg launched a periodical that created a regular printed channel for reports in mathematics and natural philosophy.
Leibniz demonstrates a calculating machine
📅 1 February 1673Leibniz presented a model of his stepped reckoner to the Royal Society, aiming to mechanize repeated arithmetic.
The stepped drum extends mechanical calculation
📅 1 February 1673The design could support addition, subtraction, multiplication and division through controlled movement of gears.
Mechanical arithmetic changes the meaning of skilled work
📅 1 February 1673The machine sought to transfer routine calculation from human operators to a device, anticipating later debates about automation.
The calculator depended on craft knowledge
📅 1 February 1673Instrument makers, metalworkers and workshop techniques were essential to realizing designs often credited only to a philosopher-mathematician.
A Dutch observer documents microbial life
📅 9 October 1676The 9 October account became important to the later history of microbiology, although it was not yet a theory of infectious disease.
Water samples reveal an unseen living world
📅 9 October 1676The letter compared well, rain, sea and other waters through a microscope; identification of individual species came later.
Microscope observations travel from Delft
📅 9 October 1676Leeuwenhoek sent his observations to Henry Oldenburg in London for discussion at the Royal Society.
Leeuwenhoek describes tiny organisms in a letter
📅 9 October 1676His dated letter reported living “animalcules” in pepper water and water from different sources.
Newton's Principia is published
📅 5 July 1687The first edition laid out laws of motion and universal gravitation.
One theory links falling objects and planets
📅 5 July 1687The new work used the same gravitational principle to explain motion on Earth and in the heavens.
The Principia sets out planetary mechanics
📅 5 July 1687Newton presented mathematical arguments for orbital motion and other celestial phenomena.
Astronomy gains a mathematical framework
📅 5 July 1687Publication supplied tools for calculating motions of planets and comets, though later work refined them.
The Principia drew on global observations
📅 5 July 1687Astronomical and geographic data came through imperial and maritime networks; its achievement was mathematical but not socially isolated.
Mathematics unifies terrestrial and celestial motion
📅 5 July 1687The work argued that the same quantitative laws could explain falling bodies, planetary paths and tides.
Halley supports publication of the Principia
📅 5 July 1687Edmond Halley encouraged Newton, managed the printing and paid costs when the Royal Society could not.
Newton's Principia is published
📅 5 July 1687The Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy presented laws of motion and universal gravitation in a geometric mathematical framework.
Bayes' essay is read to the Royal Society
📅 23 December 1763Richard Price presented Thomas Bayes' posthumous essay on inverse probability to the Society.
Inverse probability links evidence and uncertainty
📅 23 December 1763The essay considered how observed outcomes could update beliefs about an unknown probability.
Price edits and communicates Bayes' unpublished work
📅 23 December 1763The event shows that mathematical authorship and survival often depend on editors, correspondents and institutions.
Bayesian methods later gain wide influence
📅 23 December 1763Modern statistics uses related ideas in science, medicine and computing, although current Bayesian theory extends far beyond the 1763 text.
Ramanujan is elected Fellow of the Royal Society
📅 2 May 1918The election recognized his investigations in elliptic functions and number theory, making him one of the youngest Fellows.
An Indian mathematician enters an imperial institution
📅 2 May 1918The honour increased Ramanujan's visibility while also revealing how recognition was controlled through metropolitan academies.
Hardy and collaborators mediate Ramanujan's reception
📅 2 May 1918Correspondence and collaboration helped translate his compact formulas into forms accepted by British mathematical culture.
The archive preserves both achievement and inequality
📅 2 May 1918Ramanujan's election certificate documents acclaim, while his career also reflects unequal access, wartime hardship and colonial dependency.
