Jacob Zuma is inaugurated as president

Zuma took the presidential oath at the Union Buildings in Pretoria after the National Assembly elected him. His presidency began under the policy direction adopted by the ANC at Polokwane, including commitments to rural development, employment and a more active developmental state. The inauguration also marked the handover from transitional president Kgalema Motlanthe.
