Government of National Unity is announced

← Back to Dashboard
Organization history 📅 11 May 1994 📍 South Africa

The new government included ministers from the ANC, National Party and Inkatha Freedom Party under the interim constitution. The ANC held the largest share of cabinet portfolios, while the arrangement guaranteed representation to parties above the constitutional threshold. This coalition was a negotiated transition mechanism, not an end to political disagreement or to the social and economic legacies of apartheid.
