ANC and government begin talks at Groote Schuur

← Back to Dashboard
Organization history 📅 2 May 1990 📍 South Africa

The talks began in Cape Town amid continuing violence and distrust. The resulting Groote Schuur Minute set a process for addressing political prisoners, return of exiles and the lifting of emergency restrictions. The negotiations were a contested phase of the struggle: the ANC sought to end repression and create conditions for a democratic settlement while communities continued to experience state and political violence.
