Mandela is buried in Qunu after a state funeral

Mandela was buried in his home village of Qunu in the Eastern Cape after a state funeral. The return to Qunu connected the internationally celebrated statesman to his rural home and community. The ceremony closed the public funeral period, but public debate over the meaning of his politics, the liberation movement and South Africa’s unfinished democratic project continued.
