Mandela addresses supporters from Cape Town City Hall

Later on the day of his release, Mandela addressed a mass gathering at Cape Town City Hall. He acknowledged the sacrifices of South Africans and international campaigners and placed his remaining years in the people’s hands. The speech connected his personal return to public life with the collective labour of workers, women, youth, religious communities, political organisations, and supporters across the world.
