Mandela met State President P. W. Botha at Tuynhuys in Cape Town. The meeting followed years of secret and semi-public contact between Mandela and government representatives. Mandela continued to argue that a durable settlement required dialogue with the ANC and the people it represented, not a personal arrangement for the prisoner alone.
