Mandela is transferred to Robben Island

Mandela was transferred from Pretoria to Robben Island to serve his five-year sentence. The prison regime used isolation, hard labor, censorship, and limited contact with family and political comrades. The transfer came before the Rivonia Trial and placed Mandela inside the same carceral system used against other anti-apartheid organizers.
