During protests marking 500 years since Columbus's arrival in the Americas, demonstrators in San Cristóbal de las Casas toppled the statue of conquistador Diego de Mazariegos. The action challenged public honour for colonial conquest. It made the struggle over historical memory part of continuing Indigenous resistance to domination.
