Mosharrafa links mathematics with modern physics

Cox became the first known African-American to receive a doctorate in mathematics, earning his PhD from Cornell in 1925.

His dissertation contributed to algebraic approaches to equations involving discrete changes.

Segregated employment and exclusion from professional networks limited opportunities despite his pioneering doctorate.

His teaching supported generations of Black students and strengthened a crucial institution within African-American higher education.

The Egyptian mathematician and theoretical physicist contributed to relativity and quantum theory and helped develop modern scientific institutions in Egypt.

Mosharrafa pursued internationally recognized research while arguing that Arab societies should control and expand their own scientific capacity.

He wrote and lectured for general audiences, presenting advanced scientific knowledge as part of national education rather than a European possession.

Vaughan became a mathematician, programmer and the first Black supervisor at the segregated West Area Computing Unit at Langley.

She assigned and reviewed demanding aeronautical calculations while advocating for staff members' opportunities.

Anticipating automation, she learned programming and helped colleagues shift from hand calculation to digital computing.
