The Natal Indian Congress is founded
📅 22 August 1894Gandhi and Indian merchants formed the Natal Indian Congress to oppose racial discrimination and organize political representation for the Indian community.
Indian Opinion publishes its first issue
📅 4 June 1903The newspaper Indian Opinion began publication in Durban and became an important platform against discriminatory laws and for political organization among Indian South Africans.
Indian South Africans begin the Passive Resistance Campaign
📅 13 June 1946Resisters occupied land in Durban to defy the Asiatic Land Tenure and Indian Representation Act, known as the Ghetto Act. More than 2,000 people were eventually imprisoned.
The Doctors' Pact unites African and Indian congresses
📅 9 March 1947Alfred Xuma, Yusuf Dadoo and Monty Naicker signed a declaration of cooperation, committing their organizations to joint struggle for full democratic rights.
Indian voters largely boycott tricameral elections
📅 28 August 1984The boycott of the House of Delegates election weakened the legitimacy of the apartheid government's constitutional reform.
