Blackwell became a major statistician and the first Black scholar elected to the United States National Academy of Sciences.
His work includes renewal theory, dynamic programming, Bayesian statistics and the Blackwell approachability theorem.
Opposition from Princeton reflected how elite mathematical spaces excluded Black scholars regardless of achievement.
His teaching, collaboration and mentorship helped widen pathways into advanced mathematics.
